About the Foundation for the WA Museum

Established in 1995, the Foundation for the WA Museum mobilises, harnesses and directs support for the Western Australian Museum to increase the cultural, scientific, educational and social impact of the Western Australian Museum and help secure its long-term financial sustainability.

The Foundation does this by growing the funds under management in its Discovery Endowment Fund; obtaining direct funding support for specific WA Museum projects; and setting up a program of sustainable, regular grant giving that supports the strategic priorities of the WA Museum.

Evolving Connections

The Tianqi Lithium Connections Gallery at WA Museum Boola Bardip highlights the many different ways in which global networks, like trade and immigration, have shaped WA. The Gallery is a testament to a new global connection.

Named after Founding Partner Tianqi Lithium, the partnership between Tianqi Lithium, the Foundation for the WA Museum and the Western Australian Museum was born out of Tianqi Lithium Corporation’s Chairman Jiang Weiping’s passion for history, heritage and community, and his desire to deepen the relationship and cultural connections between China and Western Australia.

Dazzling Diprotodon discovery in the Pilbara’s red dirt

In October 2023, a fossil dig took in the Pilbara, near CITIC Pacific Mining’s Sino Iron Mine, to recover several rare and nearly complete Diprotodon skeletons. Diprotodons are extinct marsupials, related to koalas and wombats.

Rob Newton, CITIC Pacific Mining’s Head of Corporate Affairs, commented “When we were approached by the Museum, we jumped at the opportunity to form a partnership to enable this dig to go ahead.”
